The ship's hull is damaged.
It's taking on water.
The sailors are so terrified in the storm that they are strapping themselves to parts of the ship so that they don't get washed overboard.
There's a 22-year-old sailor on board who reported, quote, The ship was so violently struck by the sea that she trembled and shook as if she would instantly break to pieces.
The same young sailor was at the helm and he had to step away from the wheel and he asked another sailor to take his spot.
Seconds after he moved away from the helm, a wave hit and washed that other sailor away.
This young man was expectedly terrified, and he said he believed that any moment would be our last.
He was so overcome with terror that
That he found himself shouting into the storm, and what he said, he later reported, actually surprised himself.
Because he started screaming Lord have mercy on us.
And in his own words, he said that he was struck by this because it was the first desire I had breathed for many years for God's mercy.
He was not a religious man.
Now, obviously he survived the storm or we wouldn't have the story.
And it was in a way a a significant turning point in his life because following this deliverance.
He dedicated himself to God.
That sailor was John Newton.
Many of you know that name.
He's most well known for being the composer of the hymn Amazing Grace.
But here's the interesting part.
Despite the deliverance he experienced that day in the North Atlantic, despite God hearing his cry for mercy, despite believing that God is the one who delivered him from that terrible storm, Newton himself said this quote,
