Newton was a slave trader and he continued to be a slave trader for many years following the storm in seventeen forty eight.
In fact, he grew in ranks and eventually became a captain of his own slave trading ship.
So how do we make sense of his experience in the storm that day?
Looking back, Newton said that he didn't consider himself a true believer after following after that storm.
And it wasn't until many years later when he repented.
From of slavery.
That he said that was the amazing grace moment in his life.
That's when things really changed for him.
Here's what I want to wrestle with today.
There is a difference between being rescued and
And being reborn.

On March 10th, 1748, John Newton was rescued by God's power, but he was not reborn.
He was saved from the storm, but he was not transformed.
In heart, soul, mind.
That wouldn't happen.
For many, many years later.
Newton's story captures what I wanna wrestle with this morning in this second part of looking at John chapter eleven and the story of Jesus raising of Lazarus.
