What I found instead was people in the middle.
Now, it makes sense that the people who aren't proud of the U.S.
wouldn't be running to a block party celebrating its 250th birthday.
But still, pretty much everyone I talked to expressed admiration for the economic opportunities that exist here and admiration for the country in general.
We kept snagging on this idea of the melting pot, though, that the U.S.
is a place for different types of people to come together.
We heard Vicky Sanchez, who's originally from the Dominican Republic, say that America is great because of immigrants from all different countries.
But she also said that ideal is under threat.
And Kathy Schwartz, the military veteran, said the U.S.
was a melting pot of ideas.
But some of those ideas were scary to her.
And to Darren, it seems like he wants to get back to a melting pot where different ideas can peacefully coexist.
But politics are just too divided for that right now.
On the 250th anniversary of the country's founding, people love that the U.S.
is a melting pot, but they have different ideas of what that means.
This was The Bethlehem Project, the series where we explore U.S.
economic and political issues through the lens of one city.
Our show was edited by Mark Filippino and it was mixed by Sam Giovinko.
Topher Forges is our executive producer and Flo Phillips is the FT's global head of audio.
I'm Sonia Hudson.
