The thing about the French election is that it all hinges on the second round.

Once you've got yourself a second round place, you've got to get fifty percent.

And that's where it's more difficult.

The polls are not clear at this stage.

They were a little bit clearer for Jordan Bardella, but with Marina Penn, they're not so clear.

They're always around just over fifty percent.

So it's going to be extremely tight.

But at this point, we are still nine months out from the election.

And I would say polls in the past have often been wrong.

So there's really everything to play for.

It's a G seven that's been very much dominated by crises, geopolitical crises, the war in the Middle East, Ukraine.

Sophie Pedder is our Paris bureau chief.

But it's also about Donald Trump.

He's dominated all conversations as almost every time he's been at a G7.

In fact, the French shifted the date to accommodate his birthday party and celebrations.

And as a result, I think they went into the G7 with pretty low expectations.

Their main objective was to keep Trump on site, to keep him in France.

And so far they've managed that.

And I think the mood is more optimistic.
