Like, if you want to say you should if you want to live by your values, that's not a nonsense statement.
If you want to say you should if you want to be accepted by your community or live by your community's standards or whatever, that's not a nonsense statement.
But the should without anything after, I actually just believe is gibberish.
Now, a lot of people disagree with me.
Tons of philosophers disagree with me.
I want to try to be a little epistemically humble here.
I'm happy to try to defend my position, but it's controversial.
Well, I think that's a coherent position if you already assume you value other beings having their values and preferences met, right?
Then it's like, yeah, you should do that because you're trying to nail into the wall.
You're trying to get other beings have their values and preferences met.
But then where does that, why, right?
It goes deeper and deeper.
And because I, valuism comes out of my, you know, it doesn't require rejecting moral truth to be a valuist, but it comes out of my attempt to say,
How should I live now that I don't believe shoulds mean anything without conditioning?
And then say, well, there are, as an empirical fact, things that I deeply value, things I value for their own sake.
That gives me structure, things to aim for.
And why?
Well, those are the things I fundamentally value.
I'm not making a claim that you should do it in the same sense that people make moral claims because they don't think the should means anything.
Right.
