That's when I got the call from the coach saying, you're going to be playing this week starting.

So I kind of feel that was my debut rather than that first one.

No, I never felt like that.

I always try to back my ability, but the game's so hard.

It's a bit of the old cliche, really.

You can only do your job as well as you can if the guys in the middle are doing their job.

And that's a natural.

If your forwards don't dominate, then it's hard for you to do something.

And I was very fortunate enough to play with some very good forwards, some very good players who I look in awe of what they did on the footy field.

Those guys in the engine room, what they put their body through was just unbelievable.

The game's different now.

It's different as in physicality, but what those players back when I was playing, and even players before that, they went through it harder.

How tough were the guys?

I'm talking about my grandfather's era, the 60s, the 70s, the 80s.

I go, wow, how did they play the game and last that long?

Yeah, street smarts.

Just don't tackle.

And then, yeah, I broke my arm when I was playing for New Zealand, actually, and that stopped the streak.

But I didn't actually know that I had that problem.

until I broke my arm, yeah.
