Thank you, Steve, for having me again on the show.
Indeed, I think we're living in unprecedented times in France with far reaching consequences for Europe and by extension, obviously, the conflict in Ukraine.
President Macron has dug himself into a corner, no doubt, with two years remaining in his second term.
He's been unable to keep a stable government and maintain a majority.
in parliament or even pass a budget he came to power in 2017 by offering an alternative to traditional republican and socialist party dividing and conquering by promising to govern from the liberal center now that he's eviscerated the left and right uh middle middle of the road parties uh the national uh um
far right and far left parties have become the main forces battling it out to block Macron's policies time and again, and he's incapable of building a strong enough majority
in parliament.
Now, a little bit about the Fifth Republic, which came about in 1958, as you mentioned, when General de Gaulle was asked to come back and find a new path forward for France after the failure of the Fourth Republic.
The Fourth Republic came in 1946 on the heels of the end of the Second World War.
It was a parliamentary regime.
comprised of a number of political parties and a weak president.
And it had a few gains, notably immediately after the war, France's efforts to rebuild the country following the war and the massive destruction across the country.
It was also at the birth of social security.
and the social gains that France has been so proud of for the last 70 years.
And it also contributed to the beginning of the contours of the European political project.
But eventually, as a war raged in 1954 in the former colony of Algeria, still a colony back then, and political parties were fighting it out for
and blocking each other's governments, the country came to a standstill.
The war exacerbated the tensions at home, and the losses on the battlefield called for General de Gaulle to be called back to the front.
forefront of French politics, he was elected in 1958 and immediately proceeded with writing a new constitution, what we have come to know today as the Fifth Republic.
That constitution wanted to do away with this tyranny of the political parties,
