So for my second child's birth, which was in 2020, I designed myself a toi moi ring with two stones. One was a heart and one was a pear shape. And that really started a huge wave of two stone interest for us. And I would say for the two years following that, a huge influx of interest in two stone rings. And this was everything from two diamonds, a diamond and a gemstone, two different gemstones.

So there were price points for everybody. We were doing minis and big ones. And even a lot of people were bringing in their old engagement rings that they weren't wearing and saying, I want to give this new life. And we I personally love it. I still wear mine all the time. It was rose gold. I've since changed it to platinum because I wear that now for my more dressy occasions. It's cool.

I think most people find some symbolism in the two stones. I think initially it's meant to be a representation of you and your partner. For me, it's a representation of my two kids. And I know that each of them will get one of those stones one day. So I think there's really something special to that.

you know, from an overall like value perspective, when a client is considering one big stone or two smaller stones. There's definitely trade-offs each way, but you definitely get a bigger overall impression when you have two stones side by side. And people really liked that.

And there's definitely a lot of talking points about, you know, why you chose those two different shapes or two different colors. And I think it's just a really fun way to bring conversation into the jewelry too.

Yeah. Right. Well, so we actually. I'm not wearing it today. I should have been. But I love the combination of two different shaped diamonds. I think it's really interesting. So I built out an entire collection called the Undecided Collection. And it used rounds and emerald cuts. The first piece was an eternity band that I designed for myself. So- top half was rounds, bottom half was emeralds.

And this was all happening at the same time that Instagram became a platform that businesses were starting to use. And, you know, it became this portfolio of images of all the things I was working on and the fun projects I had completed. And slowly, slowly, that word of mouth disappeared. you know, turned into something much bigger. Where do you manufacture, Stephanie?

And as the ring is moving on your finger, you're getting a different versions of sparkle. And so that's something we built out into studs. So now you're wearing one in one and a pendant. And, and so there are different ways to, you know, eventually kind of break that up into two pieces and refashion it. And there's also something fun to that too. Totally. I love that. I love that.

I don't. No, that's good. It is good. It's good. Some days I think I would love to have him in my business and he's, you know, my unofficial board of trustees, but, um, it is nice to have that separation and actually our offices are across the street from one another. I don't know if it is anymore. It's regulated. I mean, gold is up so much. So the difference isn't all that different. Yeah.

So my mom used to tell me I'm Queen Elizabeth because I'm matchy-matchy everything. So like if my shoe has a little silver detail, then all the jewelry has to be silver for me. I've done better at doing two-tone and mixed metals. And I actually, I wear this stack every day that's got all three. Yeah, see, I told you that, Kimmy. You mix it.

So this is my way of being like, all right, I match everything because I've got it all represented. But I would say yellow is my go-to for every day and white is my go-to for evening. Right.

I think rose gold is the only one that's tricky. If you're very fair, I think rose gold can kind of be washed out. But no, not really.

Step cut diamonds, what is that? Step cuts like the emerald or the asher. Again, emerald is like one of the two most classic choices for engagement rings, so I wouldn't consider that a trend. Yeah, and same with platinum.

Yeah. So this is an interesting and hot topic and colored stones and champagne. I think we're seeing a shift towards those for the same reason. I don't want to talk too much about lab grown because we don't sell it and I don't want to give it so much airtime. But I will say for those who want to buy natural products,

So we, I have kept a lot of my manufacturing on 47th Street since that really is my background. And because it's so high touch, I'm able to really communicate close and work closely with my jewelers there. Right. But a lot of our pieces are also made overseas, just nature of the beast. Right. Whether they're from Italy or from Italy and Thailand.

There has been some shift towards slightly more yellow or champagne diamonds because that is one way you can know that it is a natural diamond. They don't make lab-grown champagne or yellow. Lab Grown has sort of defeated the confidence of the buyer about diamonds. There's just so much confusion. And I think the younger generation doesn't quite understand what the difference is. So they are going towards gemstones that they feel like they have a little bit more confidence in.

Okay, no, what am I talking about? Slightly... Off-white is what we would call it. It's more yellow on the scale, but still technically considered a white diamond.

But for the younger generation who's making a decision how they're going to spend these first big dollars, I think... There is something to knowing that you're buying natural, knowing that what you're buying is going to hold value.

status about showing yes I have a real diamond well so this is a good question because you are young yeah and you don't have a ring yet correct so thanks for reminding sorry if it were up to you yeah Within a certain budget, knowing that you could get something that is three times the size, but lab grown. Yep. Or much smaller, but natural.

So we have a whole range of manufacturing partners that we work with. Yeah.

And that's how I feel. And that's how our clients feel. But there is a very large population of people who see size and they're getting a nicer quality and they're okay that it's not natural. And, you know, I'm not here to judge either decision. It's to each their own. You care about different things. Yes. Like having. But I do think. If you see a 20-year-old walking around with a six-carat ring.

Yeah. I think, again, just kind of people are looking for things that feel different, more unique. Yeah. You know, everyone is sharing their rings on Instagram. So how many round pave bands can you see? You know, it's people want something that feels more unique and really speaks to their personality. Makes sense. Yeah.

Well, what's interesting is that I've changed so much over 12 years. So things that I loved 12 years ago are not things that I love or wear now. And I think that my woman has evolved with me. So in the beginning and to this day, something that I was always known for was color. I was always very much into rainbow, almost obsessively into rainbow. And that was a huge part of

I think the same way. If her friend is not in a situation where she's at harm, then let them. Let her come to that decision on her own.

Yes. I have two thoughts. One, we're seeing a ton of men wearing brooches. Yes, I saw that on the Oscars, by the way. And that I'm all about. I love that for them. The other thing is... A brooch could be converted to a pendant. So I think for someone who has a lot of them, it's not that they don't go bad just because no one's wearing brooches. I think they can be used in other ways.

But I am curious to see what happens because the Met Gala theme is like suiting this year. So I think we will see a lot of lapel embellishment. And that will be nice to see if it trickles down into fashion. Yeah.

Red carpet is such a it's such an anomaly. It's like this own fairy tale version of a world that doesn't really exist. I think, you know, you see. Whatever the bigger brands are trying to push from their catalog, essentially. But those things don't usually trickle down into the everyday jewelry.

What I think drew people in initially was that I did it in such an over the top way, like truly head to toe. And over the years, that's become more muted and more color blocked and a little bit more elevated. But still, you know, speaking to that colorful lifestyle, I think is something that people resonate with.

I do think some of our brides are inspired by red carpet fashion. That could be. You know, because that is one moment where you are the most extroverted of yourself. And so, you know, even something like wearing a necklace backwards because you've got a big open back, like that's maybe something a bride wouldn't think of unless she had seen that on a red carpet.

I love pearls. I think they're great. We are introducing more pearls into the collection because I just, I think they, they have a place in fashion jewelry. I think it's, you know, when you have, it's not something I would purchase first if I were starting to build my collection. But once you have the basics of your diamond tennis necklace and studs, I think pearls are a fun place to go to.

And I saw this particularly during COVID when people were really down and having those moments and glimpses of happiness, whether it be big diamonds or colorful clothing and all of it in between. I think brought people joy, and it was something that we could build a community around.

So I love like a pearl drop earring, I think is really fun. For me, pearls feel very vacation focused. So, you know, white t-shirt and a a pearl drop earring or a pearl that's got a big chunky gold pendant on it. There are definitely ways to make it feel younger. I have my mom's pearls that I wear, you know, in ways that she would never, but it makes them feel like they belong in my wardrobe.

I think that she should have a choice. You know, most of our couples come in together and learn and make initial selections together. And then generally he or she would come back separately to make an actual purchase. I don't know that. I wouldn't need to handpick my stone necessarily, although I do. Well, you should, as you should. You know, I think having input for sure.

And so now you'll see doses of rainbow in the collection, but it's done in a different way, a lot less in your face. But I think having those doses of color in your life is important, and I think it's something that resonates with our customer. I don't think jewelry trends change as quickly as ready-to-wear does, which is nice. And yes, thank goodness because you're investing in these pieces.

Yes, which is why I think it's important to come in together and get on the same page about, okay, I know you want three carats, but this is what your budget is going to get you. And now we can have a conversation. Do you want to go down in quality so that you can get three carats? Or do you prefer this higher quality and it's going to be slightly smaller? So knowing the trade-offs.

Yeah, absolutely. All right. You don't even necessarily need to talk numbers. It's really about like leveling the playing field. This is what the budget affords. And if it's not something you're happy with, let's consider other options.

No. I mean, at-home jewelry cleaner or soap, water, and a toothbrush. Exactly. Toothbrushes are very good. An old toothbrush. You know, if you have a big event and you want your ring to really be sparkling, sure, the jeweler can clean it for you. But generally, avoiding hand lotion and perfumes and all those things. Do you shower with a ring? No. Take it off to shower. Take it off to exercise.

Fine jewelry is not really trend-driven so much as materials and... Color schemes and things that evolve over a lifetime. But what I think is most interesting is how quickly things swing back in jewelry.

So, I mean, to be honest, Instagram is a great place to find that inspiration or Pinterest or, you know, the ready to wear brands do a great job of layering in jewelry so that you can really experience the lifestyle of the woman. And I think that's what I've really used the platform for is to show not just a pretty piece of jewelry, but how you can incorporate it into your daily life.

Yeah, and I think that's really the motto of our brand is that every day is an occasion to sparkle. So we're not about selling you a $200,000 piece that has to sit in your drawer because you have nowhere to go. I mean, look at how people dress for theater versus 20 years ago. Right. the occasions just aren't there to wear those huge, serious pieces.

be of the moment trendy and then it will end up being timeless 50 years from now so from the beginning is still good well that's the thing when you're buying an engagement ring the center stone is really your your big investment so I've always been a fan of leaning into whatever it is in the moment that you're loving because the setting can change and I'm not suggesting you change it every year but

But every five, 10 years to give a ring new life, I'm all about that. And so from the beginning, my bridal has always been very playful, very much of the trend because it should be a reflection of where you are now. I don't think you necessarily have to think about where you'll be in 10, 20 years when you're picking your engagement ring. Think about that in terms of the stone.
But every five, 10 years to give a ring new life, I'm all about that. Okay. So this is fun. I was working for this diamond wholesale company on 47th Street. And every few months I would find something new that I loved and I would save it to my computer at home, which I shared with my boyfriend at the time we were living together. And just to back up, my boyfriend and I are high school sweethearts, went to college together.

So we had been together forever. So there was no real question of whether we were getting married. It just wasn't something we had really spoken about. But of course, I'm working with diamonds every day and playing with jewels. So I would save rings that I liked to the computer and they would change every few months. And so at the time, it was this rose gold split shank ring.

And nobody was- Explain for the viewers. Yes. What a split.

I will. What a split. I will. Okay. So first of all, rose gold was not trending at all. Nobody was wearing rose gold yet. And that is exactly the reason that I loved it because I felt like if I'm working in this industry and I want my ring to feel special, then it has to be something very different than everything I've made for everybody else.

Sure. So I started my business in 2013. It was my first job right out of – well, my first job right out of college was in the Diamond District. That was my intro. Oh, wow. to this world. And it was actually an internship that was meant to be just for the summer. I was applying to all of these glamorous jobs at magazines that I thought I wanted to have.

So I chose rose gold and then a split shank is like two rows of diamonds that taper outwards. So it's wide at the top and tapers down the finger. And I had nothing in rose gold, like absolutely nothing. So nothing goes with it. Exactly.

So my then boyfriend knew that I would want another piece in rose to match it or I would not be happy having the ring until I got the whole set, the wedding band too. Yeah. He's well-trained. Wow. He was. He is. He still is. So when he proposed, he woke me up at, like, 7 a.m. earlier than I needed to be to get ready for work. And, you know, my first instinct was to, like, shoo him away.

Like, I've got an hour. Leave me alone. And then he, you know, kind of nudged me again. And he had this red Cartier box. So, of course, I sit up.

And I open the box, and there's a love bracelet inside, and it's engraved BG Heart SG, our initials, April 26, 2012. So cute. I'm like, this is so nice. What's it for? What's April 26? Wait, was your maiden name also G? No. Oh, OK. I didn't pick up on that, though. So I said, what is April 26? And he said, it's the day I asked you to marry me. And then he brings out the rose gold ring. And so those were my first two rose gold pieces. And we had plans to travel to L.A., which, you know, we always used to do during college together. And we celebrated there. But that was our proposal. Did you keep that setting even now?

I knew you were going to say that. But I have a whole set of rose gold things. Naturally. And I will, of course, come back to them at some point in time. Right now I'm feeling yellow and I have upgraded my ring a couple of times for different occasions. I have two children, so I've gotten different rings with each.

I think there's so much sentiment that's wrapped up in jewelry. And it is one of those things that you really can hold on to for a lifetime and pass down. And we see so much of that.

I have so many clients who are in their 20s and 30s bringing in pieces that their grandmother left them. or that their mother gave them. And we repurpose them and give them new life and make it feel like something that belongs to this new wearer, but it always has that sentimental attachment to the original owner. Totally.

And after two months of working with diamonds every day and learning about this industry, I was totally hooked. And I ended up staying with that company for five years. So during that time, I kind of Took everything in, learned the ins and outs of the wholesale part of the diamond industry.

Yeah. I mean, even from when I started my business to now, the things that I wear are different. And I've seen a lot of my friends, you know, when you get engaged, you are obsessed with the ring and it has to be everywhere and you want to show it off and you're so proud of it. And then I think...

You know, you have kids and you're busier and your hands are dirtier and you stop wearing the ring and now you just wear your wedding bands. It's not that the things become less important. It's just that your life changes. And I think over a lifetime, the things that you wear and care about shift a little bit.

I don't know. I kind of feel like there is the right woman who can pull that off, and it... you know, I think what's cool about jewelry is that it can transport you to a time and a place and remind you of a person. And, you know, it's like a smell in that way. Like it's, you know, a perfume. It just, it kind of takes you there.

So I think why not have grandma wearing the big hoops that remind her of her younger days. Right. If that was your vibe.

And then after that time, felt like there was just more opportunity to be in front of a customer that felt more familiar to me and to be designing for the woman that I really was. So I left in 2013 and started my business. And at that time, it was word of mouth, friends and friends of friends.
And then after that time, felt like there was just more opportunity to be in front of a customer that felt more familiar to me and to be designing for the woman that I really was. So I left in 2013 and started my business. And at that time, it was word of mouth, friends and friends of friends.
I love that.
I love that.
So we commute together, but yeah, we have our own thing. Yeah, I love that.
40 years?
So Selena Gomez got engaged with the marquee earlier this year.
Well, I mean, I'm bigger the better, right? I know. All right. So, oh, I'm coming back. Wait, what else is happening there?
So that's one way that I know that if you're wearing that, I know that you're wearing natural. And I think there's something to that. So interesting. And then just with the way...
You don't believe it. You know, something's up. Well, or she married very well.
Yeah, I think that's right.
And so it does inspire this more, you know, fantastical version of what you could do. Um, so in that way, I think we can see it in some bridal trends.
Yeah. I'm, I am all about it. Like I said, I'm matchy matchy. So I, I love it. I think it's fun.
No, I wouldn't do just, you know, the classic pearl strand, although like there is a time and a place for that. Right. Yeah.
That's very smart. Yeah. You never want to look at things that are over your budget. That is just not setting you up for success.
Take it off to sleep. Like any other piece of jewelry.
I don't have long nails, so I can't sympathize.
And you can't do it on yourself. Yeah. I mean, if you make it bigger, then it's very heavy, and then it falls to the front. So that's really the reason why you wouldn't want a big clasp.
Fine jewelry is not really trend-driven so much as materials and... Color schemes and things that evolve over a lifetime. But what I think is most interesting is how quickly things swing back in jewelry.
She only had one date. Basically.
I really never had a dating experience outside of high school. So we weren't there yet.
I guess now.
I guess there would be some sort of social media involved in that. in a young person's life. I'm trying to imagine myself before social media was my life, my job.
You do? I do.
I probably should be.
I don't. I haven't really thought. They're not so much on my feed as story, but they're definitely on there.
Yeah, it's definitely a big piece of the community building. It's a tricky.
So, you know, things that were very much in fashion when I started in this business, like the diamond by the yard chains that then kind of quieted and we didn't see any of them and then they came back. or diamond hoops that were all I sold in my first two, three years of business. And then we saw no diamond hoops and now they're coming back.
And as they get older, it will get harder.
I do. Absolutely. I am curious if there is one piece of jewelry that's in your repertoire that you love the most. Like what is... And was it for a certain occasion or a self-purchase?
Yeah. So if you're not wearing the little ones, you should go in and grab a couple.
Follow on Instagram at Stephanie Gottlieb and our website is stephaniegottlieb.com.
So it's nice that you can consider find jewelry a true investment because yes, it will have cycles and moments where it's more on trend than others, but it never really goes away. Right.
And so styling is a big part of that.
So let's elevate the more playful everyday pieces and make them fun, make them special, investment worthy, but something that is very wearable.
I agree with that.
be of the moment trendy and then it will end up being timeless 50 years from now so from the beginning is still good well that's the thing when you're buying an engagement ring the center stone is really your your big investment so I've always been a fan of leaning into whatever it is in the moment that you're loving because the setting can change and I'm not suggesting you change it every year but
But every five, 10 years to give a ring new life, I'm all about that. And so from the beginning, my bridal has always been very playful, very much of the trend because it should be a reflection of where you are now. I don't think you necessarily have to think about where you'll be in 10, 20 years when you're picking your engagement ring. Think about that in terms of the stone.
What shape do you really love? And then there's so much you can do with the setting to adjust it to your lifestyle. Exactly.

Right now I'm feeling yellow and I have upgraded my ring a couple of times for different occasions. I have two children, so I've gotten different rings with each.
And I'm building a collection that, you know, hopefully I have forever and pass down to my children one day. Very nice. It's nice when it has that sentimental value as well.
Um, you know, I'm sure you have beautiful pieces in your collection that I do wear and I don't wear them at all.
I love that.
