It really is.
The director, Terence Fisher, who was their key director, and Peter Cushing always said that they were not horror films.
They were adult fairy tales.
And I think this one proves that that's exactly what they are.
It's gorgeous.
There's the cameraman is a man called Jack Asher who was experimenting with colour in horror because there really wasn't much colour in horror before Hammer.
So there are these weird pools of light, sort of purple, no reason for them, but they're those sort of pools of purple light under the stairs and things.
It's all very bizarre, but it works beautifully.
And the art director was a man called Bernard Robinson who could,
who could make a set look a million dollars with no money at all.
He was a king of revamping things.
So if you really, really look at those films, you start to recognise pieces of scenery and props and things that crop up in film after film.
Hammer were extraordinary because...
It was a factory.
I mean, they were at Bray Studios in their golden period and they were shooting one, preparing another and editing the one before.
So it was a conveyor belt of horror movies, maybe horror movies.
Oh, absolutely.
I think Amazon have bought Bray Studios.
