But if the other person, if both people are able to listen and try and put in the work of changing, of hearing their partner, and in that situation, say, the wife might need to hear that her husband is frightened,
That he's scared of giving up his job, of retiring, of setting a date when he would do that.
He doesn't know what he's going to do with his life.
He doesn't have his wife's confidence or desire to travel or build things or do things.
So she'll have to hear his fear as well.
And that may help him to shift.
Oh, I mean, anger is actually an ordinary part of everyday life.
I always think of, you know...
Sometimes people come into my room and they're just too nice.
They're just... And you realize they really avoid being cross with their husband.
They avoid being cross with everyone, being angry.
They're people-pleasing.
Yeah, they're people-pleasing and conflict-avoidant, we say.
And to me, conflict or getting angry is a bit...
People are frightened of it, partly because we teach our children not to get angry or not to hate.
We don't teach them how to get angry or hate.
Hate is ordinary.
It really is.
Winnicott, who is a wonderful British psychoanalyst, said, if you can't hate your parents, who can you hate?
I mean, meaning you have to grow up learning how to have rage and then to apologize, repair, fix the relationship.
