My name is Stephen Hughes, and this is a voice note sent to me by the Georgianian writer-director Zane Durayi.
She was working on her debut feature film, Sink, a powerful and unsettling drama about a young mother coping with her son's growing mental health issues.
So why do you think it hasn't been a subject for Middle East cinemas?
I was talking to Zain just after Sink's European premiere at the London Film Festival in October 2025.
She told me just how hard it was to get finance for the film.
So where did you find the funding then, eventually?
Jordan does have a growing film industry and has often been used as locations in Hollywood movies, most famously in Lawrence of Arabia.
However, that doesn't seem to make it any easier for Jordanian directors to make their movies and tell their stories.
Despite her lack of opportunities for Jordanian filmmakers, Zain knew from an early age that she wanted to be a director.
Are there film schools in Jordan that you could have gone to?
So what was it about Titanic?
Was it that they created a world that you could be drawn into?
Right, okay.
So there were no, what we would call, art movies being shown in Jordan at the time.
So it's all kind of Hollywood.
Yeah, you've got to find them on your own.
Yeah, yeah.
But there will be cinemas that will obviously show Sink.
