Writing was the only thing that I knew I was halfway any good at from since forever.
Properly began or struck me was I think I was five or six and
and I was at school and we were supposed to do art.
So they got out two things.
They got out great big sheets of white paper to draw on or with your crowns or whatever.
Paints, it must have been paints because they needed, the second thing that they brought out is they needed something on the floor, so the paint was,
wouldn't drip off the white paper.
And what they brought in, there was a newspaper, continues to this day, a newspaper in England called the Daily Mirror.
And in the 1960s through to the 70s, what they would do in London is that they would bind a week's worth of the Daily Mirror, put this yellow cover on it, this particular cover,
shade of yellow, quite beautiful, vulgar almost.
And they would stitch a week's worth of the newspaper and they would ship it out to the colonies, the dominions, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa.
And it would arrive in New Zealand three months later.
And this is what they used.
They tore it apart in class and they used it on the floor just to soak up the paint.
And I remember, like, you know, you could see it underneath the paper that you're supposed to be painting on.
And I sort of lifted up the paper to read the newspaper.
And it was just fascinating.
It was like an out-of-body experience to be reading about a culture, England, and the things that they were concerned with over there, like this group called the Beatles.
You didn't really get a lot of exposure to them in the newspapers here.
and all sorts of subjects, you know, coming out of London.
