And I knew after the opening sentence, which was only three words, that this was going to be a book and that I'd have to do it and that I'd have to stand accused of someone who went back on his word that he wasn't going to do another crime book.
And here one was.
Yeah, the opening sentence was, his name was Polkinghorn, which is obviously based on the legendary opening sentence of Moby Dick, call me Ishmael.
Three words with a name at the end of it.
And I immediately liked the comedy of it, the way it subverted this masterpiece.
And it immediately got to one of the spells of the trial and writing about it was his name.
Just the way you build into it.
He'll appear behind you.
I mean, everything about him, he's such a vivid person.

And he was all warm because he loves his own grandkids.
You know, he's a very affectionate, sincere guy.
A page at the beginning of the book, I quote in a text that he sent me when my brother Mark died saying he was sorry to hear it.
