In the team pursuit event, the American men entered the Olympics as the world record holders and the reigning world champions, and they were the favorites.
But here in Italy, on home ice, the Italian team proved to be too much.
in the gold medal race, and it wasn't even close, Italy winning by four and a half seconds.
The Americans end up with a silver medal.
In the women's team pursuit, the U.S.
was viewed as a medal contender.
The American women made it to the bronze medal race, but were beaten by Japan.
