21-year-old Jordan Stolz had to come from behind, but that's exactly what he did to finish first and win gold in the men's 1,000-meter event.
At the 600-meter mark, Stolz trailed by more than three-tenths of a second.
He was able to overcome that with a blistering final 400 meters.
His winning time of 1 minute 6.28 seconds set an Olympic record.
Stowles, who has dominated in World Cup events, came here with a realistic chance to win four gold medals.
His next race is the 500-meter event this weekend.

The Americans dominated the game from start to finish, easily beating their Canadian rivals 5-0.
The U.S.
scored twice in the first period, two more times in the second, and once in the third.
Hannah Bilka scored two goals to lead the U.S.
It was the worst defeat ever for the Canadian women in the Olympics.
Still, this is only the preliminary round.
Both the U.S.
and Canada are expected to make it into the next round, and because they are the two most dominant teams in women's hockey, many expect there to be a rematch in the gold medal game.
The U.S.
and Canada have won every gold medal in women's hockey since it became an Olympic sport in 1998.
