What was different to you about these two deals?

For you in reading your column, this was a huge missed opportunity for the city in your view.
I was gonna say, what are those reasons?
What would have caused the city to to rush the Royals deal when there are examples around the country of slow walking something like this might have been hugely beneficial to the city?
In your view there was the city had a lot of leverage at its disposal to try to finesse this deal and bend it more to the city's liking, but they passed on all that leverage.
What leverage were you talking about?
Well, this notion that the council wanted to avoid a public vote, you know it seems to me there are any number of dynamics that are different this time around compared to the vote you just referenced from a couple of years ago where citizens voted down a downtown Royals ballpark.
If it did go to a public vote, do you think it would pass?
So how do you answer that question?
Why are we doing that?
Because you just said a second ago you think it would pass.
Why do we offer all these subsidies to uh folks like John Sherman and his group, which are made up of pretty wealthy people?

I have a to be a major league city that's sixty forty splits, sixty percent public investment, forty percent private, those are sort of the rough terms that get kicked around.
That's the price of having a major league ballpark in your town.

You know, one bottom line conclusion that can be drawn here is that the revenue gains as a result of using public dollars to build this new ballpark oftentimes get swamped by the amount of public money that goes into the project to begin with.
The investment outweighs the benefit.
In other words, that's not exactly a new idea, right?
