Although last night was a little disappointing after taking a four-run lead, but unfortunately those things happen.
Well, there's no doubt that when you take that kind of a lead in a game that, although it wasn't one of those games that was absolutely essential to win, it was certainly one that you'd like to have, especially when you have this series bracketed on one side by the Guardians, on the other side by the Tigers, who, by the way, find themselves just two and a half games out of first place these days.
Well, I certainly would like to see him go deep into the game because, as we all know, when you play, even with the off day on Monday...
you play enough games in a row or in a short period of time and you are in the middle now of 16 straight, you don't want to use too much of your bullpen too often.
And that's unfortunately what happens late in every season because you take a look and you can look at the appearances.
Take a look around the 45 appearance mark for most everybody out of the bullpen and you'll realize that guys aren't quite as effective after that 45th appearance
as they are before that.
And then hopefully the arms kind of regenerate and you're in good position when you get into the last 25, 20, 25 games of the season.
Because as some very good managers have told me over the years, it's not the best bullpen that wins.
It's the healthiest bullpen that wins.
And it's the manager's job to make sure that it's healthy.
And that goes down to starting pitching.
I mean, Sean Burke was great going seven last night, leaving just six outs, unfortunately.
For one of the few times, the bullpen just didn't get it done.
That pen that's been a whole lot better than a lot of people thought it would be just had one of those nights where things didn't work out very well.
Hudson faced three men, gave up three hits, and before you knew it, the game was tied.
So...
There's a couple things the Sox have to do.
One of them is to deliver runs with a runner at third and less than two outs.
That would be really nice.
