Well, I think there are a number of things that they could connect to. Not least was his defiance of Supreme Court rulings on the potential expulsion of Native people. Obviously, he had a very complicated relationship with the federal government, but he stood up very strongly because the nullification crisis in the 1830s when South Carolina said, unlike Jackson's view of the Supreme Court, no, we're not going to enforce the tariff.
