I love this characteristic of workers in their 20s and 30s these days.
They're very open about emotional issues and how family and personal issues affect them at work.
The young woman I profiled in this recent story was very open about her loss and how it affected her career.
First it stalled it, and then it sort of reignited career progress for her.
These employees are very open.
They expect their employers to listen, and they really feel entitled to
to the opportunity to manage both family and work.
Well, I think hourly workers typically have some kind of policy.
Perhaps it might be more defined.
And I think that white-collar and professional workers may have more prerogative to negotiate time off.
But in general, most companies cover all kinds of employees with the same policy.
I think this is a very special time for an employer to show up as being supportive of an employee.
If you can imagine an employer's response might be very compassionate if you've just suffered a terrible, tragic, sudden loss versus an employer who tries to dictate policy covers three days.

It's really a time when the employer employee bond can be either firmed up or destroyed.
Well, that's right.
I think smart employers are seeing this as an opportunity.
And some very well-known employers, such as MasterCard and Airbnb and Adobe and some others, have
dramatically expanded the time off allowed for bereavement because they've become more sensitive to this issue.
And of course, Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, suffered the loss of her husband in 2015 and wrote about that in a book.
