And I'm still a physicist.
It's true.
That's the beauty of physics.
Physics is one of my intellectual idols.
John Hopfield once said, physics is a way of thinking.
And I certainly subscribe to that.
I think physics provides us with a powerful set of tools and perspectives and ways of approaching problems.
And I, in my work, I apply that across domains.
Yeah, it's been a circuitous trajectory.
In college I started wanting to do philosophy and I somehow stumbled into physics.
I was working on quantum physics problems and so these days what I work on is studying how things move at microscopic scales in complex environments.
And so with bacteria, for example, which is one of the big things my lab works on,
Typically in microbiology labs, what we do when we study bacteria is we study them in liquid cultures or on flat agar plates.
And that's really powerful and that's given us tremendous insights.
But most bacteria don't live in bulk homogeneous liquids or on surfaces.
They live in the porous complex tissues and gels in our bodies.
They live in mucus where they can cause infections and
They can do good things and they can do bad things.
And so one of the things that we got really interested in is just trying to understand better how the molecular interactions between the molecules in mucus that make mucus slimy and snotty, how those interactions influence how bacteria grow.
And we studied that using tools and approaches from physics.
