I am against the death penalty.
I was one of those prosecutors at the Department of Justice who was known not to be willing to take a death penalty case because I don't believe in it.
Because I think the death of one innocent man or woman is not worth the system itself.
And having been inside the system as a prosecutor, once you see how the sausage is made, you don't eat sausage.
You know that.
Prosecutors make mistakes.
Cops make mistakes.
Witnesses make mistakes all the time.
I will also say in a case where you have...
A prosecutor saying, I don't want this person put to death.
When you have a case where you have a jury that says, I may have gotten it wrong.
When you have a victim's family say, I don't want this man put to death.
My question is then what is the point, right?
If our system is about rehabilitation.
If our system truly is about that, and it's unfortunately not, if our system is about sending a message, it just is counter to everything.
But what I will say in terms of his words, that is a man that has accepted his fate regardless of what the criminal justice system is going to do.

what is going to happen to me, then I'll accept that.
If life is what is going to be given to me, then I'll accept that.
But a death penalty case without forensic evidence has always been extremely troubling to me.
