Now, for my explainer this week, I want to tell you what an ADR is.

As history was made this week when SK Hynix was the largest ever ADR in financial history on Friday, the 10th of July, 2026.

So an ADR stands for an American Depository Receipt.

And that means a company outside the US simply lists on the stock market in one of the exchanges.

They're like the Nasdaq.

So since SK Hynix is a semiconductor company in South Korea, it went on to list in the US this week.

Therefore, it's an ADR.

But the reason that I'm bringing it up is because of its sheer size.

Not alone was it the biggest ADR in history at just under $30 billion.

It's actually the second biggest IPO in the world after SpaceX.

Well, throughout 2026, we have been talking about debt, whether it's the ballooning levels of debt that the BIFs governments owe, that's Britain, Italy, France and Spain, the rising cost of that debt, namely the bond yield, or the big tech companies borrowing to finance their eye-watering levels of capital expenditure into AI, etc.

However...

I came across a book in the library recently that caught my attention called The Detonator.

And I'm delighted to introduce its author to you, namely Andrew McNally here today.

Andrew, I found myself oscillating through the book where I went from vehemently disagreeing to nodding profusely with what you had to say.

Will you set out the central premise of the book for our listeners, please?

So if we start off with that, I do want to highlight to listeners that this book is around about 11 years old.

So what you were writing about was rooted around about that time and an awful lot of things obviously hadn't happened at that point.
