In confectionery, we saw new flavour variations, the growth of large bags and very deep promotions to encourage purchase.
If we take the advertising restrictions on foods high in fat, sugar and salt as an example,
It's taken eight years to go from the announcement of the policy to the enactment of the nine o'clock watershed.
The lobbying from the food and advertising industries has been intense.
But... What was very clear is that the real world enactment of the policy
The aisle-end promotions simply moved somewhere else in the store.
They moved to the back wall or to new displays or to bargain buckets in the middle of the aisles.
And all of this offset the expected impact of taking the foods off the prominent locations by the checkout.
It's clear to me that too many businesses are following the letter but not the spirit of the law.
My colleague Peter Scarborough showed that businesses reformulated drinks to be just below the five grams per litre of sugar threshold, rather than taking out as much sugar as they possibly could.
Prices were adjusted.
And what this happened was this avoided the fact that sugary drinks would be more expensive than the lower sugar options.
In fact, in own brand drinks, the prices of high sugar drinks actually fell after the levy was imposed.
This means thinking not about the individual components but the whole system we have to produce, prepare and distribute foods.
A system which is driven by competitive global markets where price is king and long supply chains where people need to keep food for longer and where food production is concentrated in the hands of big corporations.
And this ultra processed food system is the only coherent theory I've got to explain the rise in obesity that has paralleled economic development across the world.
When people are removed from the process of preparing their own food and local food culture is impoverished, dietary habits change towards the unhealthy pattern that we see today.

The ultra-processed debate, food debate I suppose, I think has become incredibly polarised and it also keeps getting reduced down to individual products.
