There's a lot of incredible description.

It's so vivid.

It's so bright.

She really kind of is able to paint a picture of these characters.

And I think even what's so good as well is that the characters, they're complicated characters.

Even Big Madam is a horrifying character.

But you also have sympathy for her because you can see that her situation is not ideal and that she has had to fight to where she's got to.

But it's how you treat people as you wish to be treated.

They're complicated characters and I enjoyed that.

I agree.

I really enjoyed it.

And I became fully immersed in their lives.

I had a really clear sense of place, of the weather, which I think is one of the characters in the novel, and of those shadows that you talked about.

I felt that the spectre of the Second World War was completely covering the whole book.

I found a lot of it really very moving.

It was moments where I was crying.

I mean, I found it quite shockingly moving.

You mean actually tears?

Yes.

Yeah, I thought it was really fascinating the way the characters interact and how they deal with things.
