I guess paddicking and all that grassland management is even more important when you go organic because we haven't got the option to accelerate grass growth with synthetic fertiliser.
There's no short-term fix.
And the first year, when you stopped using synthetic fertiliser, was the grass growth, was it lower than it usually is?
How many are in this bunch?
And they're all quite easy calving.
Have you bred for that?
Is a big part of organic and that philosophy of less inputs, less veterinary as well, less management...
So you need a lot of straw in an organic system to bed them on?
We're still very, very dependent on fossil fuels in farming.
Like, are you seeing your pathway in organic getting out of that?
Yeah, I suppose when I came home, we were conventional sucklers and maybe in my head I was like, beef is still our main business, but I want to diversify and not have all our eggs in one basket and try and decarbonise as much as we can.
So we have put in solar through TAMs.
But as you can see with the prices, you can move towards an alternative if there is a viable alternative.
Fossil fuels, so I'm kind of, I'm very mixed on it.
I think it's made people aware, if they weren't already, how dependent food systems, the whole thing is reliant on fossil fuels.
Like, what was the farmer reaction around here to the fossil fuels package?
Do farmers feel, OK, we protested, I know you weren't part of the protest, but at least something is being given to us
Yeah, I guess any support is welcome, but it's a bit double-edged.
Yes, in the short term, that's going to help and everyone has to make a business work and make ends meet.
It's a fix for now, but it doesn't work towards the long term.
