And pre-pandemic, you know, discounts, big discounts, especially around this time of year, were very normal.
Retailers got shoppers so hooked on these deals that anytime they tried to eliminate them, they got punished by falling sales.
Then we enter the pandemic where supply of goods became very scarce at a time when people were pretty much stuck at home and not spending money on anything else.
So they wanted to buy stuff like sweaters and cozy clothes and UGG boots, and there wasn't the availability.
So that helped to sort of keep prices high.
Retailers didn't have to discount to get the sales.
Now we're kind of going back to the way things were before the pandemic.
Well, apparel, in fact, is the only category where prices this year are lower than last year when you account for inflation.
Other categories like furniture, consumer electronics, toys, although there are discounts being offered,
the prices consumers are paying are still higher than a year ago because of inflation.
Well, Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, which means that last weekend, that last Friday and Saturday before Christmas are really going to be huge days for retailers.
And it also means that, you know, because shoppers are going back to stores this year,
They don't have to place their orders as early.
You know, when you're ordering online, you have to worry about those shipping deadlines to make sure your gift arrives in time for Christmas.
So the feeling is there's going to be a lot of last minute gift buying that last weekend.
And that's not good news for retailers because the longer shoppers wait, the more nervous retailers get and the more they discount their prices.
So that's good for consumers, not as good for the retailers.
You know, it really will depend on how much stuff they have left over.
If they are stuck still with too much stuff, they've got to clear it out in January, February to make room for spring goods.
So it's really going to all come down to how well they do in these next two months, six weeks or so.
