For my final episode before the summer break, I'm joined by chartered clinical psychologist, author and psychology lecturer, Dr. Mally Coyne. podcast-host
Mally lives in Galway with her husband, Pete, and their two daughters, Jessica, who's 14, and Amy, who's 12. podcast-host
She first joined me on the pod during the pandemic, helping us navigate one of the most uncertain periods of our lives. podcast-host
And today she's back to help us explore something that is just as relevant, our relationship to rest. podcast-host
It is summer, you know, kids are off school, but a lot of them are in camps because unless you have jobs where you're off for the summer, most of us are, if we are working, we're trying to juggle our careers along with parenting. podcast-host
And it is challenging. podcast-host
I've had this conversation with so many people with kids, they can find the summer months to be particularly difficult because you want to be present and you want to be with your kids and you want to rest. podcast-host
But then podcast-host
the mortgage has to get paid and the job has to get done and all the things that go with it. podcast-host
So I thought it was a perfect time to explore rest in all its forms and who better to do it with than with a psychologist of your caliber. podcast-host
So why is it so hard for a lot of us to rest? podcast-host
That's probably like for people listening, certainly for me as well, like that reframing of us. podcast-host
And that is based in scientific facts like this is going to be really helpful for people because this is not what we have been fed for years. podcast-host
You know, you've touched on there. podcast-host
And I think culturally, because we live under capitalism, we live in a culture that demands productivity, achieve, achieve, you know, success. podcast-host
Money, this, you know, feeding into the system, like where does rest play a part in that in that conversation? podcast-host
It doesn't really. podcast-host
And, you know, there's a brilliant book, Rest is Resistance. podcast-host
It's fantastic. podcast-host
You know, actually taking time out and kind of stepping away from the world in which it is right now does feel like a revolutionary act. podcast-host
