How do you create a dynamic in this impossible reality and in the tragedy that we face to nevertheless move to a better place and a more positive dynamic?

If you want to produce change, the first thing you need to do is generate a belief in the possibility of change.

And I think both societies believe fundamentally that change is not possible.

Yeah.

Dan, I think for a lot of your listeners, this is going to be a tough conversation because so many of us, myself included, I imagine you as well, this is an emotional issue.

And a lot of us, I think, especially those who care about the future of Israel and its security, have felt for a long time kind of under assault.

There's like selective outrage, there's libels, and that can push you into a place where you want to be quite defensive.

You don't want to ask, what do I need to do?

How do we get out of it?

You want to kind of just stay in the place of explaining why things are so hard.

So let's start there.

I think a lot of people like to hear the eloquent articulation of the position they already have.

They go to a speech on This Way Too, sometimes a podcast, to say, yeah, I agree with that.

I would say a couple of things about why we're stuck, particularly now.

The first, I think, is obvious, of course, and that is the impact of the war, these three years of war.

I think both societies, as a result of the tragedy and trauma of this war, believe that the majority in the other society has a kind of fantasy of their disappearance or extermination.

Whether or not they're right about that, I think that fundamentally, the feeling about the other side is that their aspiration is not to resolve the conflict, but to make the conflict disappear by the kind of total defeat of the other side.
