What you have the capacity and I would argue the obligation to do is ask, how do I make there be more peace?
In other words, more security, more peace.
Those things should be framed in a similar way.
And we need to kind of move away from that kind of utopian language of peace to ask, how do we make this relationship better?
I describe Zionism always as kind of operating in that space between apocalypse and the Messiah.
And the gift that we have been given through Israel is the capacity to ask, what do we do to make things better?
So there's that conceptual frame.
And with your permission, Dan, I'll talk about some urgent imperatives that I think really strike me.
And here I want to say, this is even if you're cynical about what's possible in the Israeli-Palestinian relationship.
The first kind of train headed in our direction, I think, is Israel's legitimacy crisis.
Our story is under assault in the West in particular, like never before.
Now, it's true, at least in my view, that a lot of that is not just about Israel or its policies or actions.
This came up a little bit in your conversation with Rahm as well.
Some of it is anti-Semitism and hostility for sure.
Some of it is about the way the West sees itself and looks at Israel through the eyes.
But some of it is also about Israeli policy and action.
It is hard to imagine us confronting this challenge of our legitimacy crisis without articulating some kind of positive dynamic and working towards a positive dynamic on the Israeli-Palestinian relationship.
Not all of our critics are enemies.
Yair Lapid had this line a little while ago at the Herzliya conference that the French are annoying, but they're not our enemies, right?
I kind of like that line.
