And even to meet her for a moment would burst the delicate illusion of perfection.
We blew up around each other.
I did encounter her once, though, quite by accident.
I was staying in her estate in Breilov, where she invited me often, and we'd exchange itineraries so that we shouldn't meet.
But as I was walking in the forest one day, she was there in front of me.
And we froze.
I felt my face turning crimson with embarrassment.
She was the same.
And we didn't know what to say, and this hiatus stretched and stretched between us.
And finally I tipped my hat and walked off.
And we never said a word to each other.
Yes.
We thought that it would ruin things if we met each other.
And I think I was always afraid that her perspicacity might see through me to the shadow in my soul and revile me for it.
It took a while.
Fortunately, the bad review was rather modified by my friend German Laroche, who also said he thought it was a wonderful piece, the cantata, and that, in fact, I embodied the greatest hope for Russia's musical future.
Obviously, we became fast friends.
He seemed a man of discernment and intelligence.
Yes.
And then eventually one of my pieces was played, a piece called Characteristic Dancers, was played by the great Johann Strauss, the waltz king himself, who played it in a concert in Pavlovsk.
