For the most part, life doesn't end in glory.
It blows away on a whisper of sorrow.
I thought, what could be more human than to end my symphony with a whisper and a fall?
Such an ending speaks for the many, not the few, for the reality, not the lie.
But people live by their illusions, and I suppose they want to die by them.
My brother, Modest, was with me.
And a family doctor, Dr. Bertenson, and some of my friends came.
Because I contracted cholera.
It seemed fitting.
It's what killed my mother.
And so it seemed proper for me to follow in the same way.
And I know that there has been controversy about my death ever since.
The story is that I drank a glass of unboiled water in the middle of a cholera epidemic.
How could this be when we knew we had to boil the water?
to get rid of the disease.
The disease lives in the water.
Always boil the water.
For some reason, I drank a glass of it and within five or six days was dead.
Horrible torments and one of the things I had to endure was immersion into a boiling hot bath of water which they thought activated your kidneys.
The same had happened to my mother.
