FEAR & GREED | Business News · Q+A: Does Australia's mining sector have a PR problem? · 23 Jul 2026

We have the highest wages in Western Australia in the Pilbara compared to even mining in
anywhere else in Australia.
I think that's been set back quite significantly.
We are starting to see cracks emerge and we fear going back to the 60s, 70s, 80s, even the 90s, where we had unions control the workforces and
And we didn't get the productivity that was required.
We didn't get harmonious workplaces.
We had a lot of inefficiency.
And what we saw at that time was customers internationally getting sick of Australia in terms of our reliability and look to go elsewhere.
And that's how we got the Japanese steel mills looking further afield and the Brazilian iron ore growing.
trade got up and running at that time.
So we're starting to see those changes occurring.
And right at the heart of that has been the Australian government changes on workplace relations that have given unions greater power
union rights of entry and bargaining arrangements that remove choice, choice for employees, choice for employers.
So that's what's happening.
And everybody needs to understand that those legislative changes are why we are seeing the change occurring in the Pilbara.
And that's bad for Western Australia.
It's bad for every Australian.
Oh, this is really exciting for Australia.
And I think the Australian government have done a great job in one,
enhancing that relationship with India.
