The Nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice says murders in the 35 largest U.S.
cities fell 21 percent last year, the biggest one-year drop ever and likely the lowest rate since 1900.
Eleven of 13 tracked crimes were lower in 2025 than in 2024.
CCJ President Adam Gelb says it's hard to tell what drove the drop, citing shifts in criminal justice policies and advances in crime-fighting technology.
Violent crime was already falling to a two-decade low in President Joe Biden's final year.
The numbers collected did not include stats from Jackson, Mississippi or Birmingham, Alabama, which the FBI says had the top two highest murder rates per 100,000 people in 2024.

A statement from Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn confirms the suspension of the agent and says his clearance and access to agency facilities and systems has been revoked.
Right-wing activist and self-described guerrilla journalist James O'Keefe released video he says shows the agent, a five-year veteran of the Secret Service, allegedly telling a woman about sensitive information related to Vice President J.D.
Vance's security measures and travel plans.
O'Keefe founded Project Veritas but was ousted in 2023 after being accused of spending donor funds on, quote, personal luxuries.
