But the danger of that approach is this: the external temptations that we face every day are made so much harder by the evil that exists inside us. matched

None of us is yet completely pure, and sin just continues to keep us in. matched

And hold us down. matched

So that sounds really discouraging, doesn't it? matched

Here is our dilemma though. matched

We are more pure than we were before the work of God's grace in our hearts. matched

But that work is a lifelong process. matched

And that work is taking place in a dramatically broken world where the currents of the culture we live in make it easier to take the path of least resistance than to address the bigger problem. matched

Now that does sound discouraging, but God does not leave us to deal with this on our own. matched

The best news we have is that he broke through the evil and darkness with a dramatic gift of grace, his son Jesus. matched

So let's get biblical. matched

That is exactly what we see in today's passage. matched

Matthew 1 is evidence of God crashing into a broken world. matched

On one hand, matched

you have Joseph, confused and afraid after finding out that his fiancee Mary is pregnant, and planning to divorce her quietly so as not to bring exposure and threat to her. matched

I can imagine the battle going on inside Joseph's mind, all the voices that he probably imagined hearing about what others would think, what this would mean for his future or for his family. matched

It's so tender, though, that God did not leave Joseph alone in this fear and confusion. matched

Listen in from Matthew 1, verses 20 and 21 to what God did. matched

It says, Joseph was troubled in heart, and God sent an angel to him, saying, matched

Saying, Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. matched
