The San Jose Sharks are charging toward the playoffs for the first time since 2019, led by 19-year-old superstar Macklin Celebrini, who's having an MVP-level season.

With a bright young core in place, the Sharks look primed to be big buyers at the NHL trade deadline, and the top target on their list is New York.

Rangers star Artemi Panarin.

Meanwhile, the Rangers have waved the white flag on this season, signaling a retool with general manager Chris Drury's recent letter.

They sat Panarin out of the lineup on Wednesday to prep for a trade, but he insists on a contract extension first.

The Sharks have the cap space and assets to make it happen without touching their top prospects like Celebrini or William Eklund.

Panarin has been a scoring machine for New York, racking up 607 points in 482 games, and he's on pace for another.

Huge year with 57 points in 52 games so far.

Adding that firepower to San Jose's lineup could supercharge their Western Conference playoff push, especially after they already snagged winger Kafer Sherwood from Vancouver without giving up a first-round pick.

San Jose would then lock Panarin into a four-year, $40 million extension at $10 million per season through his age 38-year.

The only wrinkle for the Sharks is their thin blue line, both now and in the pipeline, but with Celebrini and goalie Yaroslav Askarov shining, GM Mike.

Greer should go all in.
