And this is when the problems begin to seep in.
Of course, you know, these papers, some of which were published before I was even born, right?
Questions about some of these had existed on an anonymous forum called Pubpeer going back to 2015.
So seven years before I showed up on the story.
And Mark Tessier-Levine had never publicly responded.
And the journals had not corrected or retracted these papers.
And the institution, Stanford, made him president in 2016.
So he went through the vetting process.
And these questions clearly were not fully addressed at that time.
Well, I, you know,
I came here as a coder.
This was something I did a hell of a lot of.
So I ended up, I was one of half a dozen kids who skipped through the intro sequence of computer science classes.
I jumped straight to the so-called Weeder class, CS107.
And in tandem with that, I applied for and was very lucky to be accepted to join the organizing team of TreeHacks, which is the school's annual hackathon.
And TreeHacks has a sort of modest, ostensible mission, right?
That this is a hackathon that takes place once a year in February where, you know, students from around the country, actually around the world, come to build projects in a 48-hour stretch and there are prizes and whatnot.
What it actually is, to some degree, is this sort of
one of these sort of disguised entry points to the Stanford inside Stanford.
Because, you know, what builders who are doing it, because they're actually the geniuses who are going to reshape the world in their image, are so valuable in this place.
