The Gulliers are fortunate in having close relations with someone who has been a senior British diplomat who is about to become the British ambassador to the Pacific.
And they contact him and he arranges for them to be offered Australian visas.
If people had old masters, they were stripped.
But if you had modern art, they were much less interested.
The one kind of form of possession which you were allowed to take was your kind of household effect.
And you needed special permission to take your pictures.
And in part, there was at least a partial exemption if a picture was a portrait of a Jewish subject.
So as part of wanting to make the Greater Germany Judenrein or free of Jews, they also wanted to make it in part free of images of Jews.
It was in a flat in Cremorne and it was on the top floor.
You went up the steps, you went into a hallway, you turned left into a kind of living room, dining room.
It wasn't a big living room.
and there was some big, ebonised, heavy furniture on either side to the left and right.
And then the first picture you saw on the right-hand wall was the Klimt painting of Hermine.
Hermine.
I am one of two great-grandsons of Moritz and Hermine Gallier.
And it was because Gretel and Keita, or Kath as she became in Australia, were living in this flat when I was born in 1957 and were there through all my childhood and schooling.
And so I was there all the time as a baby and then just kept on visiting.
Not all that much.
My family, characteristic of the time, was set on assimilation.
