And so the rate of spending by outside super PACs in these primaries will likely be increasing.
I think there could be a variety of reasons, but essentially a lot of outside entities realize that the normal course of action is that you would fund an existing super PAC or an existing independent expenditure that is connected to one of the parties.
What you're seeing more and more now is that these entities
whether they are corporate or nonprofit, are realizing that they can set up their own super PACs and pursue their own agendas without having to go through the parties.
Sure.
Currently, when it comes to campaign spending and the relationship between campaigns and federal party committees, they actually can coordinate specific expenditures.
So a campaign right now can have the NRS, the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee, or the RNC, the Republican National Committee,
pay for a TV buy or a program based on the current laws.
There are caps to that right now.
There are caps to how much federal parties and committees can spend on these coordinated expenditures.
What the Supreme Court case is deciding right now and what likely we in the Democratic Party believe is going to happen is that the Supreme Court will likely strike down these limits
so that party committees can be able to contribute or to be able to coordinate an unlimited amount of expenditures with the campaigns, which means that party committees can be able to take advantage of certain things that only campaigns can take advantage of, such as
the lowest ad cost unit, which is right now, federally speaking, when they are running TV ads, they are given the lowest candidate rate available.
And that will allow party committees to then take advantage of that.
Yes, and it will likely increase the amount of money being spent through the coordinator campaign side.
And the idea would be that likely that the super PACs would have less of an influence because of the fact that the party committees would be able to take advantage of this spending on this campaign side.
I think overall, anything that's putting more money into the system and that is not regulating the amount of money that's being spent on politics is a bad thing.
But this is the trend and this is not going to be stopping anytime soon.
No overturning of citizens united.
The Supreme Court is obviously conservative-facing right now and likely to be making more choices or decisions that are going to be benefiting of a more unregulated campaign finance environment.
