At one of the houses, there's been a terrible murder.

But what makes this book so great is it's about one man's descent into madness.

And bit by tiny bit.

Do you remember, Sarah, like he starts out by thinking he hears a mouse.

He's punching holes in the walls, you know, and it just, it escalates, but it escalates so slowly.

Like you're almost not paying attention until all of a sudden you're like, wait, he's going to buy a bear trap or whatever.

She does that.

Dennis Lehane does that.

But also, and this is really unusual in the thriller, even in the police procedural world.

These are character driven.

They are not plot driven.

So throw everything out the window that we said about like page turners propelled by plot because that's not what these books are.

Right, they're basically characters in the books.

And I think the best thrillers have that.

I mean, Dennis Lehane, you know, the working class Irish neighborhoods of Boston, that's where he sets his historical novels.

And you are always learning about a crime.

I mean, you know, in the case of Mystic River, it's about crime.

Three friends who went through a traumatic event when they were children.

And it's following them in this neighborhood through the decades.

And so, yes, it's about crime and the aftermath of crime, but it's also about this place that they're tied to.
