And he says Shohei is easily the most enigmatic athlete he's ever tried to cover, the most inaccessible athlete he's ever tried to cover.

And in part, that is because Ipe was the gatekeeper.

But as Tim pointed out, Ipe was the one working out on the field with Shohei.

It wasn't

you know, the hitting coach or the pitching coach.

It was Ipe.

And so he was training with Shohei.

And then we later come to find out through the federal investigation that Shohei was paying Ipe to essentially be his personal assistant and his manager.

Now, there are plenty of athletes who have people that do that for them, but normally it's a team.

It's a team of people.

And what's clear to me, and we really get into this in episode six, what's clear to me is that this was different, that it was just different.

Ipe.

Ipe was the only one.

There wasn't another Japanese interpreter, you know, if, God forbid, Ipe went on vacation.

I don't think he did.

There wasn't another manager who was dealing with Shohei's personal affairs.

I will say I've had plenty of people lie to me over the course of a two-decade career of being an investigative reporter.

That's not a new phenomenon.

But the utter strangeness of the 24 hours leading up to and after the interview that I did with Ipe, and it was really two interviews, that is one of the strangest and sort of, as I say, one of the most bonkers days of my life.

You don't run into that very often.
