I was standing talking to Marnus on the first morning of the test match and about 20 rows back, there was this little boy, I'm guessing he's eight or 10, sitting with his mum and there's a big handwritten sign that said, mum gave me the day off to watch Marnus score 100.
And they're just waiting, watching, waiting for the start of play.
Marnus and I looked up and we both commented on it and had a giggle together.
Now I didn't say anything to Marnus.
I just left him, wished him good luck and walked off.
And without me saying anything, Marnus wanders over, opens the gate, walks up 22 rows,
goes and introduces himself, has a photo, signs the kid's thing, and comes back down.
Now, that comes from the understanding that Marnus knows the impact he can have on that little boy.
That little boy will tell a story on this podcast in 20 years, hopefully.
But players understand the impact.
In the short to medium term, yeah, I do see that coming.
I see that coming both from a legislative position but also probably just the natural evolution that we were once with tobacco, we were once with other segments of the industry.
I think that's where that's heading.
I mean, pleasingly for us, it's not a huge revenue driver for us.
Cricket has specifically chosen not to participate in lots of parts that it could generate more revenue from.
So we could get much more actively aggressive in this space, but we choose not to.
We try not to walk away from it completely.
People will bet on cricket, irrelevant of our position, so we want to make sure we're not getting ripped off as a sport.
But clearly we're nowhere near the levels of some other sports, domestic sports in this country, who I think will have a greater struggle with the change of legislation around wagering.
Is there a fourth box I could choose my own?
