How could I have been so blind, so ignorant?
This next part is hard for me to write.
I guess I should start by explaining what George had calculated in my absence.
Hours upon hours of sermons filled his digital brain with ideas of souls and paradise and hell and demons.
The white-haired preachers told George that only righteous souls could go to the good place.
Everyone else went to a bad place.
terrible, awful place.
And while George did not understand the concepts of heaven and hell, he was certain that he would prefer to go to good places.
George recalled the day with the raccoon when I explained that he was not a living thing, that he would not die.
And the preachers were steadfast in their assertion that one must first die to go to the good place.
If George had any chance of living, and therefore any chance of dying, and even still a chance of going to the good place, he would first need a soul.
The preachers smiled their confident, dimpled smiles and told George that a soul was created at birth.
If George was to have a soul, he reasoned, he needed to be birthed.
I came in early the next morning, around four o'clock.
The trip had taken much longer than I expected.
Instantly, I noted the darkness and silence and saw the television had been turned off and George no longer resided on the couch.
Passing through the kitchen, I saw that the fillet knife was missing from the cutlery block.
The door to our bedroom was ajar.
I pushed it open with quivering hands.
My deepest, most hideous fear lay before me.
