His white fingertips were smeared in red.
Day six.
After the fish incident, Chelsea and I decided it would be best to subject George to more wholesome educational programming.
He seemed quite confident to sit in front of the television set for hours on end, soaking up like a sponge every word that the drab documentary narrator spoke.
I had been in such a hurry to get back to my Chelsea that I'd forgotten all about the trip to the store.
The nearest market was half an hour away, so I kissed my wife's forehead and pulled on a hat before heading out again to procure the groceries.
Chelsea stayed behind, sipping tea on the porch's rocking bench.
As my sour luck would have it, the front left tire on our rental car went flat halfway into town.
We were too deep in the middle of nowhere to get cell phone reception, so I had to hoof it.
I knew Chelsea would be furious that I was taking so long, but what was I to do?
A quick trip to the grocery store stretched into a several hour debacle, and by the time I got home, Chelsea had already eaten her dinner and left mine cold on the plate.
I felt that we were on the brink of another fight, so to defuse the situation, I suggested we take a stroll through the woods, alone.
We left George in front of the TV set with images of Amazonian birds and squirrel monkeys flashing before his eyes.
It was a cool, peaceful night, and so our walk turned into an evening entirely spent on the porch with a small fire crackling in the pit.
Chelsea went to bed after a while, but I stayed up a little longer to study the stars.
Time and fatigue eventually got the best of me, and I dozed off for an hour or two before I woke up cold and slinked back into the house.
Perhaps the most disconcerting aspect of George is the fact that he does not sleep.
It was well past midnight when I came in, and George's blue eyes glowed just as voraciously as the nature documentary before him.
On the screen, a trio of lions lounged in the tall grass, their black lips stained with fresh blood.
Behind them lay a zebra's carcass, picked clean, its yellow bones spackled in biting flies.
