Why have they done this?

And particularly, why now?

It's been an extraordinarily tumultuous year in the Middle East.

You touched on some of the reasons.

I guess there's a few reasons, but America, America's visual decline as a military power and what it can do and its reliability to the region, that's got to be top of the pile, isn't it?

Yeah, it really is.

And America may well not just leave the region altogether.

That's unthinkable.

It may well close a few bases that it doesn't think it can defend anymore.

And also, it's proved unreliable partner.

It simply cannot defend its Gulf allies from the trouble it's causing in Iran and the limits of U.S.

hard power.

I mean, that's the biggest test of the Iran war for me, how it's exposed the limits of U.S.

power.

And, of course, juxtaposed against that is the rise of sheer militantism.

largely through Iran's proxies, whether it's the Houthis in Yemen or Hezbollah.

And how much do you think the Mecca pact is a reaction to that?

There's sort of a lot of Sunnis getting together to say, well, look, the Americans can't short out this sort of militant Shiaism.
