The grid method is a lovely idea.
Its only shortcoming is it doesn't work as an algorithm.
When kids come to implement it, they can't make it work reliably.
It's a very effective way of exploiting place value and of keeping numbers in their columns.
The grid method, ordinary English kids these days cannot handle because there is no column structure in the layout and they get confused.
