I hope when Pico comes home, he gets the credit he deserved because, as I say, the nation was enchanted by it.
At halftime, there was a great sort of interaction between them that the cameras picked up on.
And it looked like Messi was giving it large to Pico.
And it turns out afterwards, Pico had...
tried to block one of his runs and Messi said to him hey Lopez without the ball that's a foul but Pico wasn't having any of it and he had a few words back to Messi and I'm not sure if his reply was in Spanish or Portuguese or Creole or even in native Crumlin but he certainly stood up to the great Messi as did Cape Verde last night what a game yeah Pico's a cool customer as well isn't he let's have a listen to him here he is talking to BBC Sport after the game
And the World Cup produces those moments.
Look, coming into this World Cup, we thought, oh my goodness, you know, ice in America, Trump trying to dominate over his good buddy Gianni Infantino.
We worried about there being too many teams.
Well, this Cape Verde story has, I suppose, given FIFA an out here because it has been fantastic.
to see what a tiny island nation can do to capture the imagination of the world.
And to capture Ireland as well.
I mean, it was a lovely shot at one stage of Pico's wife, Leah, and baby Diego in her arms.
And they traveling over, being in a camper van.
Pico's mom and dad and brothers going over and Aer Lingus jumping on the bandwagon and helping them out.
It's a heartwarming story.
It's been a great story.
And I have to say, so far, it's been a great World Cup.
Now Pico has to come back down to earth.
Shamrock Rovers have a Champions League qualifier in Malta next Tuesday I hope that Stephen Bradley will give Pico the first leg time to recover get home and recuperate but yeah it's back to life in Tala for Pico Lopez unless after this World Cup performance that a club comes in for him because although he's 34 years of age he proved on the world's biggest stage that he's certainly up to it he's had a fine World Cup as have Cape Verde
