And then everything else was up to the actor.

And they were going to give the director their best take first time out.

And then everything else was just a technical adjustment.

But this business of a director coming in and saying, okay, now why don't we try one where you've got a lot of variations for the editing room or getting into the psychology of the character?

Those dudes didn't have much patience for that.

Now, I grew up in the theater where psychological realism is –

our bread and butter, and I very much want to have a conversation with a director.

I ask for notes.

I want notes.

I want to have that dialogue with a director.

So directors, they work in different ways.

They're not all cut from the same cloth,

all have different interests, different skill sets, different mindset about their approach to the work.

I'm always fascinated by directors.

And in fact, the hardest thing about working in TV is that if you're working on a series, multiple directors come in to direct the series.

And that dialogue I have with the director has to change from one director to another is the hardest thing about TV for me because I want to be involved in that dialogue.
