Storms are dangerous, but then, I mean, when all you have to propel you is wind and sails, pirates could get trapped out in doldrums, and they could just be sitting, like, literally the ship not moving in still water for weeks, and people would just starve.

Because funny enough for how bad the conditions were being a sailor, pirates were actually very democratic.
And the pirate code was a real thing.
