And I suppose as a community, we have to work with people and see where we can support families so that the young person doesn't get into a career in criminality.

Well, I suppose from all the research that I've looked at over the years, the general focus is often crime.

to get the best outcomes it should be on support education systematic interventions and these can all reduce risk factors and they can also develop positive development for the young person and their parents so if we have an over-reliance on punitive measures and there is a risk there that there might be an overreach and and what might happen there is social inequalities

can be undermined.

And this protective role of the family can also be undermined.

So the approach that many of my peers and I would agree with would be a balanced justice.

So prevention, equity, recognised and parental influence without ignoring the broader social determinants of juvenile behaviour.

So it's, to me, things like what we have in Ireland, like we have the bail supervision system,

for young people in Ireland, which came out of the Green Town study from Limerick.

And this offers an alternative for young people to keep them out of criminality.

So it's focusing on intensive supervision, community-based support.

It looks at multi-system therapies.

It's evidence-based.

It allows young people, if they have

being involved in crime to not become a career criminal.

But it is resource heavy.

All of these things are resource heavy.

And I think that sometimes what happens is the resources are not there.

So part of the chain gets broken.

But that doesn't mean that the bits that are working aren't useful because they are.
