This story is so bonkers that I've always been amazed how few people outside of France have heard any of it.
But to understand the full scope of it, you have to go back a long way, all the way to 1989.
It starts with an explosion on a plane.
It's September 1989.
There's a bomb hidden in a suitcase, UTA Flight 772 from Brazzaville in Congo to Paris.
The bomb goes off somewhere above Niger in the middle of the Sahara Desert.
There are 170 passengers on board, 54 of them are French.
When the plane disappears, they're all missing.
Very soon in Paris, the news is everywhere.
She's had a big success at work, and it's her birthday.
So she goes out to celebrate.
When she gets home, it's late, 1am.
